Weeklong Community Organizer Training

Leadership Training for Change

At the heart of any successful organizing campaign is the training and development of leadership. Every year, the Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) and its statewide members host training for approximately 100 leaders from the faith and labor community, electoral politics, public officeholders and grassroots leaders who seek to be more effective organizers in their communities, churches, or workplace. OOC’s weeklong training blends the best of traditional organizing models with emerging innovation. This training has been designed and is conducted by top-level organizers from Ohio, Michigan, California, Kansas, Minnesota and New York, as well as a variety of national networks including National People’s Action, the PICO National Network, and the Center for Community Change. Over the course of a week, leaders are provided with the tools and skills to become more effective at creating transformative change in their community – teaching ordinary people to unleash their capacity to impact the social, political, environmental, and economic decisions affecting their lives.

The 2015 training is scheduled for:

Sunday, July 19 through Friday, July 23

Xavier University

3800 Victory Parkway

Cincinnati, Ohio 45207

Cost: Tuition plus room and board for this six-day on-site residential training is $400 per person for OOC affiliates and qualified applicants or $475 per person from non-affiliated groups. Lower rates will apply for OOC members who bring at least five leaders to the entirety of the training. All leaders and organizers must have prior approval for attendance if not members of an OOC affiliate. Scholarships are available for low-income participants. Please see your organizer for a scholarship application.

What you will learn: In this training, you will engage with other participants in a learning community that emphasizes self-reflection and mutual inquiry. You will benefit from a life-changing environment that encourages the examination of your strengths and weaknesses through calculated risk-taking and the practice of new behaviors. You will learn to discover your self-interest, what drives your leadership, and how to frame your personal story for a public life. Experienced trainers will teach you the path to building individual power and powerful organizations through the launch of strategic campaigns, while naming the political and economic moment.

The training is sponsored by the Ohio Organizing Collaborative in collaboration with the Akron-Canton Organizing Collaborative, The AMOS Project, CURE, the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative, the Maumee Valley Organizing Collaborative, the Miami Valley Organizing Collaborative, NOAH, Ohio Prophetic Voices, the Ohio Student Association, and other members of the OOC.
